    British Driving for Overseas Drivers

Adapting to driving in the UK can be challenging, especially if you’re accustomed to driving on the right side of the road. The UK follows left-hand driving rules, and its road systems, including numerous roundabouts and dense traffic, may feel unfamiliar. Your comfort and safety on the road will depend on factors such as your driving experience, confidence, and how long you’ve been in the UK. Taking the time to familiarize yourself with these differences can significantly ease your transition.

    • If you're from the European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA), you're allowed to drive in the UK using your valid EU/EEA licence. You can continue driving until your licence expires, provided you remain under the age of 70. Once you reach 70, or after residing in Great Britain for three years (whichever is longer), you must exchange your EU/EEA licence for a UK driving licence. Note that if your EU/EEA licence was obtained by exchanging a non-EU licence, it will only be valid in Great Britain for 12 months from the date you became a resident.
    • For drivers from non-EU countries, the rules are different. You can use your foreign licence to drive in the UK for up to 12 months from the date you became a resident. After this period, you must pass both the theory and practical driving tests to obtain a UK driving licence. Alternatively, if you're from a designated country such as Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, or Switzerland, you may exchange your foreign licence for a UK one without the need to retake the driving tests.
    • If you haven't exchanged your licence or passed the required tests within the 12-month period, you must stop driving. To continue driving legally, you would need to apply for a provisional UK driving licence and pass both the theory and practical tests.
    • Remember, if you continue driving without a valid UK licence after the 12-month period, you would be committing an offence, and your vehicle could be seized.
